West Lothian in the Early Middle Ages.

The October talk will be given by writer and historian, Tim Clarkson, on West Lothian in the Early Middle Ages.

A talk by Tim Clarkson. Independent Researcher and Historian.

VENUE Bathgate Partnership Centre, South Bridge Street, Bathgate, Bathgate EH48 1TS

The period of the 5th to the 10th centuries used to be known as the Dark Ages, but the term now preferred by historians is the Early Middle Ages. Why the change?

It used to be assumed that the ‘Dark Ages’ was one of intellectual, cultural and scientific decline following the departure of the Romans - and that the darkness didn’t lift from lives and minds until the Renaissance brought the rediscovery of the cultural and intellectual riches of antiquity, and a new age of reason and humanism.

The term has pejorative overtones, suggesting these centuries were backward, ignorant and priest-ridden, all of which are now known to be false and derogatory views. A great deal is now known about about the Early Modern period in Scotland, and still more will be known by us all, after Tim Clarksons talk on the subject. He’s an independent researcher and historian and has had many books published on this period.

Come along and hear him shed light on West Lothian in the Dark Ages Early Middle Ages at the October meeting of WLHAAS on Wednesday 21st October 7.30pm.

Room 11, Bathgate Partnership Centre, South Bridge Street, Bathgate EH48 1TS.
